Mink: Fur obtained from the mink, a small carnivorous mammal. Not vegan.Salicylic Acid: Derived from bearberry, meadowsweet, willow bark, or the leaves of other plants. It can also be produced synthetically by heating phenol with carbon dioxide. It is vegan.
Shellac: An insect secretion. Not vegan.
Silk: A fabric made from fibers produced by the larvae of certain bombyx moths (“silkworms”), the harvesting of which requires the destruction of the insect. Not vegan.
Sodium Alginate: The sodium salt of alginic acid, extracted from brown seaweed. It is vegan.
Sodium Aluminum Sulfate: A white solid used as an acidity regulator in foods. It is primarily used in the production of baking powder. It is produced by combining sodium sulfate and aluminum sulfate. It is vegan.
Sodium Benzoate: The sodium salt of benzoic acid. It is produced by reacting sodium hydroxide with benzoic acid. It is used as a food preservative. Vegan.
Sodium Bicarbonate: Baking soda. Vegan.
Sodium Carbonate: Soda ash. A sodium salt of carbonic acid. Vegan.
Sodium Chloride: The chemical term for table salt. It can be obtained through mining (rock salt), by adding water to salt deposits (evaporated salt), or from oceans and salt lakes (sea salt). Vegan.
Sodium Hydroxide: Caustic Soda. A water-soluble solid typically produced by processing brine. It used to be obtained from the ashes of a specific type of seaweed. Vegan.
Sodium Lactate: The sodium salt of lactic acid. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): The sodium salt of sulfated ethoxylated lauryl alcohol. Vegan.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): Prepared by sulfating lauryl alcohol and then neutralizing it with sodium carbonate. Vegan.
Sodium Metabisulfite: An inorganic salt. A white to yellowish powder with a sulfur dioxide odor. Used as a disinfectant, antioxidant, and preservative. Vegan.
Sodium Phosphate (mono-, di-, and tri-): A synthetic material typically prepared by partially or completely neutralizing phosphoric acid with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide. Vegan.
Sodium Stearoyl-2-Lactylate: Prepared from lactic acid and fatty acids. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Sodium Sulfate: The sodium salt of sulfuric acid. Vegan.
Sorbic Acid: A white powder derived from fruit or produced synthetically. Vegan.
Sorbitan Monolaurate: Derived from plant-based raw materials. Commercially known as Span 20. Vegan.
Sorbitan Monostearate: Produced by reacting stearic acid with sorbitol to obtain a mixture of esters. Commercially known as Span 60. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Sorbitan Monooleate: Derived from animal or plant sources. It is commercially known as Span 80. The plant-derived version is known as Span 80V. It should be verified whether it is plant-derived.
Sorbitan Monopalmitate: Derived from plant-based raw materials. It is commercially known as Span 40. It is vegan.
Sorbitan Tristearate: Derived from animal or plant sources. Commercially known as Span 65. The plant-derived version is known as Span 65V. It must be verified whether it is plant-derived.
Sorbitan Trioleate: Derived from animal or plant sources. Commercially known as Span 85. The plant-derived version is known as Span 85V. It must be verified whether it is plant-derived.
Sorbitol: A sugar alcohol derived from fruits such as cherries, plums, pears, and apples, or from corn, seaweed, and algae. It is vegan.
Sourdough Starter: Also known as a “starter culture,” “sourdough culture,” or “sourdough starter.” It is typically made from a mixture of flour and water inhabited by yeast and lactobacilli, usually containing no animal-derived ingredients. Sometimes yogurt is used as a starter. Bread made from sourdough starter is called sourdough bread. It is important to verify whether it is plant-based.
Spermaceti: A waxy substance extracted from the head of the sperm whale in the shape of a candle. It is not vegan.
Sponge: An animal or animal colony living in “shallow” water, characterized by a hard, elastic skeleton composed of interlocking fibers. Check whether it is plant-based.
Squalene: Found in the liver of sharks (and mice). Check whether it is plant-based.
Starch: A complex carbohydrate found in the seeds, fruits, tubers, roots, and stem pith of plants such as corn, potatoes, wheat, beans, and rice. It is vegan.
Stearate: A salt of stearic acid. It must be verified whether it is plant-based.
Stearic Acid: Fat derived from cows, pigs, sheep, dogs, or cats. It can be obtained from plant sources. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Stearin(e): The general term for three glycerides (monostearin, distearin, tristearin). It consists of a combination of stearic acid and glycerin and is primarily applied to tallow or tristearin, the main component of tallow. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Stearyl Alcohol: Prepared from spermaceti whale oil or plant sources. It must be verified whether it is of plant origin.
Stearyl Tartrate (Stearyl palmitoyl tartrate): Made from stearyl alcohol and tartaric acid. It must be verified whether it is of plant origin.
Sucroglycerides: Obtained by reacting sucrose with an edible solid or liquid fat, either in the presence or absence of a solvent. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Sucralose: Known by the brand name Splenda. Produced from sugarcane. While not all Splenda manufacturers, some have confirmed that they do not use bone char as a filter. Sucralose is tested on animals. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Sucrose: Sugar. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Suede: Tanned calf, pig, or cowhide. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Sugar: A sweet, crystallizable substance consisting entirely or primarily of sucrose. It is commercially obtained from sugarcane or sugar beets. Beet sugar is vegan, but some sugarcane sugars are processed using bone char. It should be verified whether it is plant-based.
Sulfur Dioxide: A toxic, colorless gas primarily produced by the combustion of sulfur-containing materials such as fossil fuels. It is vegan.
Sulfuric Acid: Vitriol oil. A highly corrosive acid typically produced from sulfur dioxide. It is vegan.
Sunette: Acesulfame. Vegan.
