Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS): It is prepared by sulfating lauryl alcohol and then neutralizing it with sodium carbonate. It is vegan.
Sodium Metabisulfite: An inorganic salt. White to yellowish powder with sulfur dioxide odor. It is used as a disinfectant, antioxidant and preservative. It is vegan.
Sodium Phosphate (mono-, di- and tri-): Synthetic material usually prepared by partial or complete neutralization of phosphoric acid using sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide. It is vegan.
Sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate: It is prepared from Lactic Acid and fatty acids. It should be checked whether it is of vegetable origin.
Sodium Sulphate: Sodium salt of sulfuric acid. It is vegan.
Sorbic Acid: White powder obtained from fruit or produced synthetically. It is vegan.
Sorbitan Monolaurate: It is obtained from raw materials of plant origin. It is known commercially as Span 20. It is vegan.
Sorbitan Monostearate: It is produced by reacting stearic acid with sorbitol to obtain an ester mixture. It is known commercially as Span 60. It should be checked whether it is of vegetable origin.
Sorbitan Monooleate: It is obtained from animal or vegetable sources. It is known commercially as Span 80. The herbal-derived version is known as Span 80V. It should be checked whether it is of vegetable origin.
Sorbitan Monopalmitate: It is obtained from raw materials of vegetable origin. It is known commercially as Span 40. It is vegan.
Sorbitan Tristearate: It is obtained from animal or vegetable sources. It is known commercially as Span 65. The vegetable-derived version is known as Span 65V. It should be checked whether it is of vegetable origin.
Sorbitan Trioleate: It is obtained from animal or vegetable sources. It is known commercially as Span 85. The vegetable-derived version is known as Span 85V. It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
Sorbitol: A sugar alcohol obtained from fruits such as cherries, plums, pears, apples or corn, seaweed and algae. It is vegan.
Sourdough: Also known as "starter culture", "sourdough culture" or "sourdough culture". It is usually made with a flour and water mixture inhabited by yeast and lactobacteria that contain no animal ingredients. Sometimes yogurt is used initially. Bread made from sourdough culture is called sourdough bread. It should be checked whether it is of vegetable origin.
Spermecet: The oily substance obtained from the head of a sperm whale in the form of wax. It is not vegan.
Sponge: A "low-level" aquatic animal or colony of animals characterized by a tough elastic skeleton made up of interlaced fibres. It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
Squalene: It is found in the liver of sharks (and mice). It should be checked whether it is of plant origin.
