How Is Castoreum Obtained?
Castoreum is obtained from the anal glands of an animal found in nature called the muskrat. Beavers are small mammals, typically found in North America and Europe, measuring 20–30 cm in length, that live along waterways. Castoreum is a fluid secreted by the animals’ anal glands as a defense mechanism. This fluid is usually obtained by forcibly extracting it from the animals.
Is Kastoreum Vegan?
Veganism advocates avoiding the use of animal-derived products and opposing the exploitation of animals. Therefore, since kastoreum is an animal product, it is not vegan and is generally not used by those who follow a vegan lifestyle.
