What Is the Catalase Enzyme?
The catalase enzyme is found in cells and is responsible for the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide can form as a byproduct of cellular metabolism and is known to be an oxidative agent that can be harmful to cells. The catalase enzyme renders hydrogen peroxide harmless by breaking it down into water and oxygen gas.The catalase enzyme is found particularly in oxygen-rich tissues, because hydrogen peroxide—a byproduct of oxygen metabolism—forms more frequently in these tissues. For example, it can be found in high concentrations in organs such as the liver and kidneys.
This enzyme helps cells combat oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a condition associated with an increase in free radicals within cells and can damage cellular components such as DNA, proteins, and lipids. The catalase enzyme breaks down hydrogen peroxide, thereby reducing the formation of free radicals and helping cells cope with oxidative stress.
A deficiency or low activity of the catalase enzyme may play a role in many diseases. For example, catalase deficiency in humans is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder. Additionally, the catalase enzyme is found in many species of bacteria and fungi, helping these organisms survive in the presence of oxygen and cope with oxidative stress.
From Which Sources Is the Catalase Enzyme Obtained?
The catalase enzyme can be obtained from both animal and plant sources. Traditionally, catalase derived from animals (particularly the liver) has been widely used. However, catalase is also available from plant sources and through biotechnological methods. Therefore, whether catalase is vegan depends on its source.
