Is Biotin Vegan? | Dietary Supplements

What Is Biotin, and What Are Its Sources?

What Is Biotin?

Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H. It plays an important role in hair, skin, and nail health, cell growth, metabolic functions, and enzyme activation. Although our bodies produce small amounts of it naturally, it is typically obtained through food or dietary supplements.

In Which Products and Areas Is Biotin Used?

1. Food and Dietary Supplements
✔ Dietary Supplements and Vitamins: Available in capsule, tablet, or liquid form to support hair, skin, and nail health.
✔ Energy and Metabolism Supplements: Biotin supports the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and contributes to energy production.

2. Food Products
Biotin is naturally found in many foods, including:

Plant-based sources:
✔ Almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts
✔ Avocado
✔ Whole grains
✔ Mushrooms
✔ Cauliflower
✔ Sweet potatoes
✔ Spinach
✔ Lentils
✔ Soy products (tofu, soy milk)

Animal-based sources (not vegan):
✔ Egg yolk
✔ Organ meats such as liver and kidneys
✔ Milk and dairy products

3. Cosmetics and Personal Care Products
✔ Shampoo and Hair Care Products: Used to prevent hair loss and strengthen hair.
✔ Nail Care Products: Lotions and creams that strengthen nails may contain biotin.
✔ Skin Care Products: It may be found in some creams that support skin renewal.

Is Biotin Vegan?

Since biotin can also be obtained naturally from plant sources, it can be vegan. However, since some biotin supplements may be produced from animal sources (such as eggs or liver), you should check the label for the words “vegan” or “plant-based.”

Plant-Based Alternatives to Biotin

1. Vegan Foods Containing Biotin

Plant-based foods containing biotin for vegans:
✔ Nuts (almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts)
✔ Whole grains (oats, whole-grain bread, brown rice)
