It is the skin of Karakul sheep, stillborn or very young lambs from the Astrakhan region, originating in Astrakhan, Russia. It is used in the manufacture of hats and various clothing. Due to the tightly coiled structure of the Karakul sheep, the ewes are killed before they are three days old.
