What Is Amber?
Amber of animal origin refers to a substance commonly known as “ambergris.” Ambergris is a compound produced by the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) and formed in the whale’s digestive system. After being expelled from the whale’s intestines, this substance floats to the ocean’s surface and, over time, hardens into a structure resembling tree resin. During its years-long journey across the ocean, ambergris transforms into a fragrant substance—similar to amber—that is highly valued in the perfume industry. When found in nature, ambergris can be gray, brown, or black, and after spending a certain amount of time in the ocean, it can turn white or silver.
In Which Fields and Products Is It Used?
Ambergris is most commonly used in the perfume industry and is found in the following fields and products:🔹Perfumes: Ambergris is used as an excellent fixative in perfume production, meaning it enhances the perfume’s longevity and ensures the scents last longer. Ambergris imparts a rich, woody, marine, and sometimes sweet scent to perfumes.
🔹Cosmetic Products: It may also be used rarely in some skincare products, as its scent can leave a pleasant impression on the skin.
Is It Vegan?
Animal-derived ambergris is not vegan, as this substance is obtained from sperm whales. However, the extraction and use of this substance raise ethical concerns because they threaten whale populations. Additionally, since ambergris is a substance that is typically found naturally in the ocean after being expelled from a whale’s digestive system, it is not taken from killed whales. Nevertheless, due to concerns about the potential harm to whales and the depletion of natural resources, vegans generally avoid using this material.
What Are the Plant-Based and Synthetic Alternatives?
There are various plant-based and synthetic alternatives that can be used in place of animal-derived ambergris. These alternatives are preferred by both vegans and ethically conscious consumers:🔹Synthetic Ambergris (Ambroxan): Synthetic ambergris is a synthetic compound used as a substitute for natural ambergris and is widely preferred in perfume production. Ambroxan mimics the scent of natural ambergris and is vegan-friendly. Modern perfume manufacturers typically use synthetic scents created with ambroxan or amber base notes.
🔹Plant-Based Alternatives: Sandalwood oil: Sandalwood has a rich, woody scent similar to ambergris. For this reason, some perfumes use sandalwood oil as a substitute for ambergris.
Labdanum: Labdanum is derived from the resin of a shrub native to the Mediterranean region and has a woody, warm scent similar to amber.
🔹Gaiacwood: Gaiacwood is a natural woody scent and is used in perfumes in a manner similar to ambergris.
